How to bond Styrene-Acrylonitrile (SAN Plastic)
How to bond Styrene-Acrylonitrile (SAN Plastic)
SAN is a high-performance polymer from the styrene family, formed by copolymerization of styrene and acrylonitrile monomers. Its general properties resemble polystyrene, but the addition of the polar acrylonitrile group provides superior chemical resistance, high heat resistance, and toughness. Like other copolymers, SAN properties can be tailored by adjusting molecular weight and composition. It can be used as a color carrier for other thermoplastics and as an additive to improve the flow of ABS, PVC, and other resins.
The main advantages of SAN are stiffness, strength, and clarity, though it has low impact resistance. Reinforcing fillers such as glass fiber can improve impact resistance, heat resistance, hardness, and modulus. SAN plastic is chemically resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons, battery acid, bases, and most cleaning agents.
SAN is widely used in industries due to its unique properties. Applications include appliance knobs, electronics casings, medical components such as syringes, packaging, and safety glass. Its rigidity, clarity, and chemical resistance make it suitable for durable and aesthetic applications.
Surface tension of Styrene-Acrylonitrile (SAN) is typically between 38–42 dyn/cm.
Popular trade names include Luran, Lustran, Styvex, Suprel, and Tyril.
Bonding
Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from contaminants. Use a non-residue cleaner.
Adhesives suitable for SAN:
- UV-curing adhesives: Excellent optical clarity, cure in seconds with UV light, suitable for UV-stabilized SAN, reduce stress cracking.
- 2-part epoxy adhesives: Strong, durable bonds, chemical and heat resistance, gap-filling, low shrinkage, moisture resistance.
- 2-part polyurethane adhesives: Strong, flexible bonds, absorb stresses and vibrations, cure at room temperature.
- Acrylic adhesives: Good clarity, fast curing, strong bonds, resistant to chemicals and moisture. Must remove excess activator immediately to avoid surface attack.
Allow curing per manufacturer’s instructions, then test the bond strength.
