How to glue Polyolefin elastomers (POE plastic)

How to bond Polyolefin Elastomers (POE)

Polyolefin elastomers can be divided into two main categories. The first type is a two-part polymer system consisting of a thermoplastic matrix, such as polypropylene or polyethylene, with a dispersed second phase of an unvulcanized rubber, such as EPDM, natural rubber, and SBR. The second category is a family of ethylene-octene copolymers. These systems can be vulcanized using peroxides, silanes, or irradiation to achieve improved high-temperature properties.

Polyolefin elastomers are characterized by excellent low-temperature properties, clarity, and crack resistance. Additionally, they offer excellent resistance to UV radiation, ozone, and weather conditions. They also have good resistance to polar liquids. Room temperature physical properties are good. Like most thermoplastic systems, physical properties decrease at higher temperatures. This limitation can be addressed by vulcanizing the polymer. However, this additional processing reduces the economic advantages of polyolefin elastomers compared to conventionally vulcanized rubber. Polyolefin elastomers typically have very low specific gravity and can be used in applications where weight reduction is critical.

POE (Polyolefin Elastomers) is widely used in several typical applications. POE is used for various protective components such as rub-strips, fascias, bumper covers, molding, and trim. In electrical applications, POE is used for both insulation and jacketing of wires and cables. POE’s excellent properties, including flexibility, chemical resistance, low-temperature performance, and UV resistance, make it an ideal material for many applications.

The surface tension of POE (Polyolefin Elastomers) typically ranges between 30 and 35 dyn/cm.

Polyolefin Elastomers (POE) are available under various trade names depending on the manufacturer. Some of the most well-known include ENGAGE, HERCUPRENE, and SARLINK. These products offer different properties and application possibilities.

Bonding
Clean and degrease surfaces thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, or grease that could impair adhesive bonding. This can be done using a non-aggressive cleaning agent.

POE’s surface can be smooth and have low surface energy, making it challenging to achieve good adhesion. Surface treatment with a primer or performing corona or plasma treatment may be necessary to increase surface energy and thereby improve adhesive bonding.

Select an adhesive specifically designed to bond to low-energy plastics such as POE:

  • CA glue cures extremely quickly, usually within seconds to minutes, significantly reducing the overall time spent on the bonding process and increasing productivity. Additionally, CA glue forms a strong and reliable bond with POE materials.
  • UV adhesive cures extremely quickly, almost instantly, when exposed to UV light. This rapid curing time significantly shortens production cycles. Additionally, UV adhesive forms a strong and durable bond with POE materials. Environmentally, UV adhesive is also advantageous as it is typically solvent-free and free of volatile organic compounds, reducing environmental impact compared to other adhesives.
  • Silicone adhesive is known for its flexibility, ensuring a strong and elastic bond that can withstand movement and deformation without losing strength. Its natural water-repellent property makes it suitable for outdoor or wet environments, and its wide temperature range makes it ideal for extreme temperature conditions.
  • Methacrylate adhesive cures quickly and forms a strong, durable bond that resists stress, vibration, and chemical exposure. It is suitable for applications requiring both flexibility and strength and can be used in various temperature environments. The adhesive is also known for its good chemical resistance and broad applicability across different materials, making it a reliable choice for bonding POE materials in industrial settings.

Allow the POE adhesive to cure completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This ensures a strong and durable bond.

After curing, you can perform a test to ensure the bonding is sufficiently strong for your specific application.
