How to bond poly(propylene oxide) rubber (GPO rubber)

How to bond poly(propylene oxide) rubber or poly(propylene oxide) elastomer (GPO)

The most notable characteristic of poly(propylene oxide) rubber (GPO) is its ability to provide excellent hysteresis and dynamic properties over a wide temperature range. Even after exposure to high temperatures, the dynamic properties of GPO rubber remain excellent. Typically, it offers good low-temperature flexibility, good ozone resistance, reasonable resistance to fuel and oil, and good high-temperature properties. GPO rubber has reasonable resistance to hydrocarbons and oils, as well as good resistance to hydrolysis and swelling in polar solvents such as water and alcohol.

GPO rubber is used to manufacture suspensions, bushings, and dust seals. Its excellent dynamic properties and resistance to heat and chemicals make it ideal for these applications where reliability and long service life are critical.

For GPO rubber, the surface tension typically ranges between 30 and 35 dyn/cm.

An example of a trade name for poly(propylene oxide) rubber (GPO) is PAREL.

Bonding

Clean thoroughly to remove dirt, grease, or oil, as this can reduce adhesive strength. Use a non-conditioning cleaner.

Surface pretreatment with a primer or exposure to corona or plasma treatment before bonding is often recommended to ensure optimal adhesion, especially depending on the specific strength requirements of the bonded assembly.

Choose an adhesive suitable for bonding low-energy plastic materials such as GPO.

  • Cyanoacrylate adhesives cure extremely quickly, reducing production cycle time and increasing efficiency. The instant bonding capability ensures reliable and durable adhesion immediately. Overall, cyanoacrylate adhesive is an effective solution for bonding GPO, combining strength, speed, and ease of use to meet modern production demands.
  • UV adhesives cure instantly when exposed to UV light, reducing production times, allowing precise positioning before curing, providing strong and durable bonds, being environmentally friendly without solvents, and offering flexibility to bond GPO to different materials without additional fasteners.

Allow the GPO adhesive to fully cure according to the manufacturer's instructions before loading the bonded parts.

After curing, perform a test to ensure that the bond is strong enough for your specific application.

Manufacturers

Zeon Chemicals is a leading manufacturer of chemical products, including elastomers such as GPO (Poly(propylene oxide) rubber). Their trade name PAREL represents specific GPO formulations designed to meet industrial needs.
