How to glue Acrylic/Plexiglass (PMMA Polymethyl Methacrylate)
Acrylic, also known as plexiglass or PMMA plastic, is a thermoplastic material characterized by being transparent, strong, and lightweight. It’s a material we often see in our daily lives, used in displays, lamp covers, aircraft windows, TV screens, aquariums, and much more. It is highly resistant to UV light, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Gluing
For optimal adhesion, parts should always be cleaned before gluing.
Acrylic is an amorphous plastic. For this type of plastic, many UV/light-curing adhesives offer very good adhesion. A key advantage of UV/light-curing adhesives is that you can control when the curing process begins (by exposing the glue to light of the right wavelength), and curing can take place within seconds.
Super glue (cyanoacrylate) is also a good solution when working with acrylic. This is especially true if it’s not a large-scale production or if lighting the UV/light-curing adhesive is difficult due to non-transparent parts.
Polyurethane adhesives are another type that, in the right variants, can be advantageously used for bonding acrylic. This type comes in many versions in terms of viscosity and hardness, allowing the adhesive to be tailored to the requirements of the part’s intended function. They are available as flexible adhesives that can withstand mechanical stress or as rigid adhesives that can be sanded afterward.
