How to glue Polypropylene (PP Plastic)
Gluing Polypropylene (PP Plastic)
Polypropylene is one of the most used types of plastic in the world due to its chemical properties. It is a durable material, does not absorb water, is electrically insulating, easily moldable when heated, and has good resistance to bacteria and chemicals. In industry, PP plastic is used in many types of clothing, in car manufacturing, for cable insulation, and much more.
Gluing
For optimal adhesion, the parts should always be cleaned before gluing begins.
Because of polypropylene's low surface tension (31 mN/m), a very special type of glue is needed to make the parts stick. Here, a 2-component Permalock AC adhesive (acrylate glue) is recommended, which has exceptionally high adhesion to several different plastics. The curing time until the parts are handleable is about two hours. Depending on the size of the parts and the amount of glue used, it takes 8-24 hours before the glue is fully cured. This is the optimal glue for the material.
If a shorter curing time is needed, a cyanoacrylate (super glue) can hold the parts together. However, this requires some preparation. For this type of glue to adhere, the surfaces must be treated to increase surface tension. This can be done in several ways. One can either buy a so-called primer, which is applied to the part immediately before gluing, or the part can undergo plasma or corona treatment.
The advantage of both types of glue is their resistance to a wide range of chemicals. Thus, they are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
