How to glue Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS plastic)

How to Bond Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS Plastic)

PPS is produced by reacting p-dichlorobenzene with sodium sulfide. The resulting polymer is a crystalline, aromatic polymer whose structure consists of benzene rings para-substituted with sulfur atoms.
This molecular structure is highly crystalline and extremely stable, resulting in excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability of PPS.

The most notable properties of PPS are its thermal stability, inherent flame retardancy, and excellent chemical resistance. PPS also exhibits good mechanical properties, which remain stable under both long-term and short-term exposure to high temperatures. In addition, PPS shows a significant increase in tensile strength and toughness at higher temperatures.
Although PPS has low impact strength, glass fibers can be added for applications requiring high impact strength and dielectric properties. Glass and mineral fillers are also used in electrical applications where high arc resistance and low tracking sensitivity are required.
Therefore, PPS plastic is available in various grades, and selecting the right adhesive can vary accordingly.

Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) is a robust material known for its durability and stability. It is widely used in industry for various applications. For example, PPS is used in chemical pumps such as submersible and centrifugal pumps, as well as in mechanical components like bearings, valves, and hydraulic parts. It is also used in small appliances.
Bonding occurs both as assembly of parts and as sealing adhesive in connection with wind sealing or other joints.

In general, the surface tension of Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) typically ranges between 40–50 dyn/cm.
However, this is an estimate, and actual values may vary depending on the specific composition and treatment of the material.

Fortron, Hyvex, Ryton, Supec, and Tedur are all well-known trade names for Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS).

Bonding PPS
Start by thoroughly cleaning the surface with a non-oily cleaning agent to remove dirt, grease, and other contaminants. This ensures that the adhesive can bond properly to the material.
Depending on the type of adhesive and the specifications in the technical data sheet, it may be necessary to apply a primer to the PPS surface to improve bond durability and strength.

Choose an adhesive designed to bond plastics like PPS:

  • Cyanoacrylate adhesive is known for its fast bonding process and strong adhesion. When used to bond PPS, it is important to ensure the surfaces are completely clean and dry for a strong and reliable bond.
  • Epoxy adhesive is suitable for bonding PPS due to its strong adhesion and chemical resistance. Epoxy cures through a chemical reaction and requires careful surface preparation for optimal adhesion.
  • Silicone adhesive is suitable for bonding PPS because of its good flexibility and temperature resistance. It ensures a reliable bond even under varying temperature conditions and enhances resistance to chemicals and environmental factors.
  • Methacrylate adhesive generally has good adhesion to various materials, including PPS. It's important to ensure that surfaces are clean and free from contaminants for optimal adhesion. Methacrylate adhesive on PPS is an effective solution combining strong adhesion, high thermal stability, and chemical resistance, making it ideal for demanding industrial applications.

After bonding, perform a quality test to ensure the bond meets strength and durability requirements.
It is important to follow specific guidelines from adhesive manufacturers and conduct tests to ensure the desired bonding results with PPS.
