How to glue Polyether Block Amide (PEBA-Plastic)

How to glue Polyether Block Amide or Polyether Block Amide (PEBA)

PEBA is a thermoplastic elastomer formed by copolymerization of polyether and polyamide. The PEBA resin family is commonly known under the trade name Pebax. PEBA consists of two-phase linear chains of polyamide segments connected with flexible polyether segments. Therefore, PEBA is a flexible polyamide without plasticizers.

The general properties of PEBA include excellent flexibility and impact resistance over a wide temperature range, low density, high elastic memory, and superior chemical resistance. PEBA can be melt-processed and can receive various colors, fillers, and reinforcement systems. PEBA is available in varying hardnesses. This thermoplastic elastomer has high load-bearing capacity, high tensile strength, good hydrolytic stability, and is biocompatible as well as chemically resistant, with excellent mechanical properties.

PEBA, or Polyether Block Amide, is widely used in various industries due to its unique properties. Industrially, it is used to manufacture robust conveyor belts and precise gears, as well as to ensure durability and reliability in packaging. In medical use, PEBA is indispensable for producing flexible catheters and sterile surgical kits where its biocompatibility and chemical resistance are crucial.

The surface tension of Polyether Block Amide (PEBA) typically ranges between 40 and 45 dyn/cm.

The trade name for PEBA is primarily known as "PEBAX". PEBAX is a well-known series of thermoplastic elastomers used in a wide range of industrial and consumer applications due to their excellent mechanical properties and flexibility.

Bonding

Clean and degrease the surface thoroughly to remove impurities, dust, or oils, as this can negatively affect the adhesive performance. Use a non-pleasing cleaning solvent and ensure the surface is completely dry.

Choose an adhesive that is compatible with PEBA.

  • -Cyanoacrylate adhesive (CA glue) is suitable for bonding PEBA due to its fast curing time and strong adhesion properties. PEBA's surface characteristics and chemical stability allow reliable bonding with CA glue. This combination enables fast and effective bonding, making CA glue ideal for applications requiring quick and reliable attachment of PEBA materials.
  • -Epoxy adhesives have excellent adhesion properties and are known for their ability to bond to a wide range of materials, including thermoplastic elastomers like PEBA. This combination allows a strong and reliable bond suitable for applications requiring both flexibility and strength.
  • -Polyurethane adhesives are ideal for bonding PEBA due to their excellent flexibility and adhesion properties, which match well with PEBA's elastic and moldable nature. The adhesive offers good resistance to stress and can adapt to PEBA's properties, ensuring a strong and durable bond between the materials.
  • -Acrylic adhesives are suitable for bonding PEBA due to their good adhesion properties to plastics and elastomers, including thermoplastic elastomers like PEBA. It forms a strong and durable bond, making it ideal for various applications where PEBA needs to be attached to other materials or components.

Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application technique and curing time.

After bonding, it is always recommended to perform tests to ensure the PEBA adhesive has achieved the desired strength and durability for your specific application.

Manufacturers

Arkema Inc. is the leading manufacturer of PEBA, which they sell under the well-known trade name "PEBAX". Their PEBA materials are widely used due to their excellent mechanical properties and versatility in industry.
