How to glue Polyisoprene (IR Rubber)

How to glue Polyisoprene (IR)

Polyisoprene is formed by polymerization of isoprene in a hydrocarbon solution. Natural rubber and synthetic isoprene both have high tensile strength properties, good hysteresis, and good properties under hot tearing. The primary advantages of synthetic polyisoprenes over natural rubber are increased process control and processing properties. These process characteristics are due to natural rubber being harvested from natural sources, while synthetic polyisoprene is produced using a highly controlled production process. The primary processing advantages of synthetic isoprene are its increased processing time and extrusion values. Other advantages of synthetic polyisoprene are that it contains no water-sensitive residues or contaminants, and it cures more uniformly. Additionally, synthetic polyisoprene can be used in larger amounts than natural rubber in SBR and EPDM blends.

Polyisoprene (IR) is widely used in various industries due to its excellent elastic properties and versatility. Typical applications include manufacturing of gaskets, bushings, hoses, coatings, pipes, belts, rubber bands, and fabric threads. It is also used for conveyor belts and other industrial applications.

For Polyisoprene (IR), surface tension typically ranges from 30 to 35 dyn/cm.

Among the trade names for Polyisoprene (IR) are ISOLENE, NATSYN, NIPOL, SKI-3.

Bonding

Clean surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, oil, grease, or other contaminants. This can be done with a non-care solvent. For optimal adhesion, it is often recommended to treat the surface with a primer or undergo a corona or plasma treatment before bonding, especially depending on the strength requirements of the bonded joint.

Choice of IR adhesive

  • -Cyanoacrylate adhesive, often known as super glue, is a fast-acting, strong adhesive suitable for many materials, including rubber. It forms a very strong bond in a short time, ensuring that the bonded parts remain securely joined even under load. Additionally, CA glue is easy to apply with precise applicators, allowing use even on small or hard-to-reach areas where precision is important.
  • -UV adhesive cures almost instantly when exposed to UV light, increasing production speed and reducing waiting time. This type of adhesive offers controlled curing since curing only begins upon exposure to UV light, allowing precise positioning and adjustment before curing. UV glue creates a strong and durable bond suitable for rubber materials like polyisoprene.

Allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer's instructions.

After curing, you can perform a test to ensure the bonding is strong enough for your application.

Manufacturers

Polyisoprene (IR) is a synthetic rubber material produced by several well-known manufacturers under various trade names. Each manufacturer specializes in delivering high-performance polyisoprene with specific properties for a range of applications. Here is an overview of some leading manufacturers and their products:

-Hardman is known for their ISOLENE polyisoprene, used in a wide range of industrial and commercial applications. ISOLENE is recognized for its excellent elastic properties and durability, making it a popular choice across many industries.

-Goodyear produces NATSYN, a high-performance polyisoprene often used in rubber articles. NATSYN is known for its consistency and reliability, making it a preferred solution in demanding applications where both strength and flexibility are needed.

-Goldsmith and Eggleton are behind NIPOL, a polyisoprene product known for its uniform quality. NIPOL is used in many industrial applications where its reliability and performance are valued.

-Alcan produces SKI-3 polyisoprene, designed to meet specific requirements in applications demanding both strength and flexibility. SKI-3 is used in various industries where its durability and performance are critical factors.
